Just before Star Wars: The Force Awakens was set to screen in December of 2015, we were promised, by Disney, a set of 3 stand alone films exploring and creating new canon Star Wars content, since revoking the pre-Disney Star Wars extended universe. Some of the ideas floating around were films based on fan favourite established characters like Han Solo, Boba Fett and Yoda. Then we received this photo:
Who were these people? Where did they fit in the Star Wars universe?
Director Gareth Edwards revealed at the Star Wars celebrations in Anaheim in April 2015, that they are Rogue One, a band of resistance fighters whose mission is to retrieve the plans to the Death Star. This movie would fit between the events of Star Wars: Episode III and Episode IV.
Then Star Wars: The Force Awakens released, and Rogue One was almost all but forgotten in the fan fair and praise to J.J Abrams for rebooting this iconic franchise in the best way possible.
Four months later fans wake up to the trailer of Rogue One. It’s almost here, and it looks amazing.
Following on from the rights done by The Force Awakens to the Hollywood film industry, we get a strong female protagonist, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a diverse cast (Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen), and a trailer that doesn’t give the whole movie away.
I thought I’d have to wait another year for my next Star Wars fix, but it turns out it’s just around the corner.
Rogue One is set to release December 16th, you can watch the trailer below.
