With Batman v Superman under-performing, it’s up to this band of weird misfits to launch a cinematic universe that Marvel are killing at. If this trailer (and the previous one) are any indication, it will probably work.
It looks as joyful and fun as a Marvel movie yet seems to distinguish itself with a certain luridness and renegade sensibility, which makes sense because these are the bad guys, after all. In fact, not just bad, but the “worst of the worst.”
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn might be the most valuable player (I miss the Brooklyn accent, but everything else is on point. She’s even got the mallet!) and I can’t wait to see her crazy interactions with Jared Leto’s new sleazy looking Joker. Will Smith isn’t sleepwalking anymore; this is also a plus! However there are some complaints that Smith will be doing his usual bland “Captain Of The Team” (Independence Day, Bad Boys), but against a live-action uncensored cartoon backdrop I think he could be a great straight man.
I love everything about this because none of it looks safe and generic – it could be a monumental career murdering trainwreck or a wonderfully unhinged outlier. I hope it’s a huge success in the vein of Deadpool because that means more weird and off-kilter superhero movies.
Suicide Squad is due for release August 5, 2016.
