It is no surprise that Blizzard Entertainment have finally ventured their Warcraft franchise into the movie business, however going from past terrible examples of video games made into movies (Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat), we can only hope this will at the least entertain its audiences.
The premise of the movie is set in the World of Warcraft realm of Azeroth, which stands on the brink of war as orc warriors flee from their dying home. It follows the story of two heroes, one on the side of the orcs, who is trying to establish a relationship with the second hero, a hero for Azeroth’s inhabitants, a human played by Travis Fimmel. This format stays true to the massive multiplayer online game that is World of Warcraft, presenting the ability to play on either side, with neither being presented as the “heroes” or “villians” as each team has their own moral code and agenda.
The movie appears to be filmed in a huge CGI world, which some critics have expressed to be a worrying sign. Personally, I think the trailer proves that CGI has come a long way since the Star Wars Prequels, and the world presented here looks beautiful and intricate.
I am a huge Travis Fimmel fan and have dabbled in the World of Warcraft game. I have my doubts about the movie, but overall, I can’t wait to experience Warcraft on the big screen.
Warcraft is set to release in Australia on 16th June.
